Another new year; also a new maker, and all this on another block I never expect to revisit.

1025 9th Avenue

The only thing scarcer than 1970s marks is marks from the 1980s. I’ve found only four, each from a different year, and that’s counting an amateur mark. So this was cause for celebration, especially in a part of Oakland I never expect to visit again.

3431 Louise Street

Apodaca Bros used this same straight mark in 1967, but switched to their current oval by the 1980s.

Hollis Avenue beneath I-580

It is so rare to find a dated mark, or any mark at all, in the concrete around freeways that I’m often tempted to skip them entirely. And yet here’s one with a coveted 1960s date.
