Some stamps from Berkeley 2

17 November 2017

Having spent a lot of time walking in Berkeley lately, I’ve collected a few more stamps bearing dates unrepresented in Oakland.

1906 – Esterly Con. Co.

1529 Le Roy Avenue

A fine double mark, though the date is dim. Oakland has a double mark from 1907.

1908 – Esterly Con. Co.

1529 Le Roy Avenue

Both of these Esterly marks are on the Hayward Fault, so it’s not clear how much longer they’ll last.

1921 – J. E. Reed

1631 Spruce Street

Oakland has a single example of Reed’s mark, barely over the Berkeley line.

1958 – G. W. Griset

2285 Virginia Street

Griset’s marks are fairly common in Oakland, but they span only a few years from 1950 to 1957.

1958 – R. D. Stoecker Inc.

24 November 2015

10501 Royal Oak Drive

R. D. Stoecker tended to do big jobs, notably the Grass Valley subdivision (in 1957 and 1959) and most of Bancroft Avenue (in 1957). This part of the Sequoyah Heights development features several unambiguous examples from 1958.

1958 – Don R. McKenzie

7 May 2015

Crestmont Drive at Kimberlin Heights Drive

I think McKenzie must have done a large part of this neighborhood.

1958 – Frank M. Brown

20 March 2015

2630 94th Avenue

1958 – R. D. Stoecker Inc.

26 December 2014

12 Shetland Court

This tract up in Grass Valley has about a hundred R. D. Stoecker marks, half from 1957 and half from 1959, with just two or three from 1958. And they’re debatable.

1958 – McGuire & Hester

25 December 2014

6310 Camden Street

Once upon a time, the mighty Oakland construction company McGuire and Hester laid a lowly sidewalk in front of a gracious home in the Seminary Park neighborhood. I have only one other dated mark from this firm, from 2004.

1958 – Kids on the block

18 June 2014

4440 Davenport Avenue

Looks like the kids on the whole block showed up on this June 5.
