1928 – J. Rodrigues

1 December 2010

1928

466 Weldon Avenue

This is J. Rodrigues, who had changed from Rodrigues & Souza in 1927 but wiped Souza’s name off and added the big “J” on the left because he hadn’t gotten a new stamp yet (he did later in 1928). The two addresses, 1619 73rd Avenue and 7221 Orral Street, are two faces of the same lot.

1928 – C. Monohan

29 November 2010

1928

722 Jean Street

This obscure mark is near the Morcom Rose Garden. As I was photographing it I thought it said “C. Donovan,” but now I see that it’s Monohan, an uncommon spelling of Monahan. The initial could be G rather than C, but only another example will help.

(Since I first posted this, I’ve revisited in better light. That’s what this photo shows now.)

W. N. Whitmore

494 Boulevard Way

Whitmore was one of the Fruitvale people, which puts him back around 1920, I think.

Castro Valley is a long way from Broadway Terrace. Perhaps I’ll find more as I push into East Oakland.

1951 – Chas. Somers & Sons

26 November 2010

1951

674 28th Street

I’ve collected this date before, but this is a much better example.

1931 – J. H. Fitzmaurice (II)

25 November 2010

1931

5000 Golden Gate Avenue

This is the first Fitzmaurice mark of this kind—the barrel shape—that I’ve found with a date. I’ve found another 1931 Fitzmaurice mark, but that one is the arched-text design. Two others of that configuration date from 1933 and 1934. Therefore it seems that the barrel came second, after the escutcheon and before the arched text, which in turn was before today’s barrel design. If that result holds up, I’ll have to redesignate the order of this mark, which up to now I’d considered the third, not the second Fitzmaurice mark.
