1945 – R. G. Wolfe

14 May 2012

1945

9th Avenue at Foothill Boulevard

This mark fits between Douglas & Wolfe 1940 and Wolfe 1949. Clearly Douglas left the partnership in one way or another, and R. G. Wolfe chiseled his name off the old stamp before he could have a new one made. This stamp also shows that the partnership started in the 1920s. A lot of information in one spot.

1941 – J. C. Vieira

13 May 2012

1941

1172 Bayview Avenue

1939 – W. Todd

12 May 2012

1939

810 E. 23rd Street

I have a W. Todd mark from this year, but this one is hand-drawn.

1937 – Frank Salamid

11 May 2012

1937

1937 9th Avenue

As always, Frank Salamid marks are rarely the same even in the same year. So I keep track.

1936 – W. M. Sharp

10 May 2012

1936

858 E. 28th Street

I love W. M. Sharp marks, but they’re always so obscure. The lettering is nice.

1933 – J. McGettigan

9 May 2012

1933

1250 E. 34th Street

There are a pair of these at this address. Both of them are much better preserved than the one I documented earlier, except for the date, which required extreme scrutiny.

1933 – Flener & Griffin

8 May 2012

1933

800 block E. 24th Street

Flener is a familiar name on Oakland streets, but I haven’t seen a Griffin of any sort before. This mark gives a date, an anchor in time, for E. Flener.
