14th Avenue at E. 23rd Street Way
It has been a long time since I’ve spotted a Tribuzio Bros mark; the vast majority are by G. or N. Tribuzio.
This address is one of several pathways leading south from 14th Avenue into the San Antonio neighborhood.

A rare mark by the modest F. Roberts.

This example is good enough to tell me that I was wrong in thinking that the numerals were a date. Instead, the mark reads “Leonard De Guarda / 4040 Quigley St”, an address at the very end of Quigley Street north of High Street.

Michele “Michael” Bua (1878-19??) was “a prominent member of the Italian colony” who immigrated in 1896 and was naturalized in 1902. He started as a cement contractor in 1908. He lived at 1607 Grove Street (now Martin Luther King Jr Way). The newspapers last mention him in 1922, but I have a hand-drawn mark I interpret as 1935. He teamed up as Bua & Roberts in the early 1920s, in the Bacon Building.

Ah, the summer of ’69 . . . that is a rare date for sidewalk stamps. All the 1960s years are poorly attested, but the 1970s and 1980s are even worse. I’m still missing the years 1973, 1980 and 1982; also 1903.
