1914 – Alex. LaPlant

4 February 2013

1914aa

3914 Woodruff Avenue

A nice readable example of this date and maker.

Orth & Braun

3 February 2013

orth-braun

3901 Glen Park Avenue

This is about as good an example of the Orth & Braun mark as you’ll ever see.

Herman C. Orth and Emil Braun were the two names behind this firm. I find it listed in the 1924 directory at 1736 Blake Street in Berkeley. In 1925 it was listed at Orth’s home address, and that year Orth appears to have begun working under his own name.

F. W. Metge

2 February 2013

metge

3644 Dimond Avenue

This is right next to the 1912 Hutchinson Co. mark in the Renaissance School property. I think that Metge and Hutchinson worked together on this paving job, which would give Metge a 1912 date too.

1966 – R. G. Wolfe

1 February 2013

1966d

1523 E. 38th Street

1948 – H. O. Mart

31 January 2013

1948t

3720 Ardley Avenue

You have to be here in person to appreciate the elegance of this signature, by a maker I haven’t seen before.

1935 – Frank Salamid

30 January 2013

1935nn

3751 Elston Avenue

Frank Salamid marks are usually unique combinations of orientation and date placement. This block of Elston has about 10 Salamid marks from 1934 and 1935, but they are all the same. I think the remarkable setting of this street made even the casual Salamid sit up and do his best.

1935 – L. Banchero

Canon Avenue at Veteran Way
