1028 E. 17th Street
This handsome escutcheon mark reads GEo GOODMAN / OFFICE / 307 MONTY ST / SF” using those adorable raised, underlined, small caps. When MS Word does this, it’s annoying.
Goodman was the manager and later owner of the California Artificial Stone Paving Company, which bedeviled other sidewalk makers (notably W. D. Perine) with lawsuits charging infringement of the Schillinger patent. It probably dates from 1897, when the house here was built.
850 6th Avenue
This appears to be the only example in all of Oakland. The partnership appears in the papers from 1892 to 1894, so this must date from that period, probably 1894. The following year John Albert Marshall, a San Francisco contractor, moved to Berkeley and began his rise to wealth and prominence. More about him on his profile page.
Harvey Y. Goff (1871-1895), an aspiring architect who had worked as a drafter for the Charles Mau and Clinton Day firms, enrolled at UC Berkeley in 1894 but died the next year at age 24. He was born in Kansas.
Perkins Street at Warwick Avenue
John Albert Marshall laid sidewalks in much of Adams Point in 1897 and 1898, although they were not marked with dates.
Actually my photo is lousy, but the mark itself is no better so it’s a wash.
UPDATE:This mark has been erased since I recorded it in 2010.
