1930 – V. Di Zillo

1930

1022 53rd Street

The next seven days will feature marks from westernmost 53rd Street, a cute winding road that parallels Temescal Creek along the Emeryville border.

1955 – J. Barale

1955

539 Merritt Avenue

When I collected pennies, my eyes widened whenever I found a 1955 because for some reason they made very few of them that year, especially here at the San Francisco Mint. It turns out to be the same with sidewalk stamps, as this is only the second one I’ve found. The date is beautifully defined.

1954 – J. Barale

1953 – L. Scaramelli

30 January 2011

1953

577 Merritt Avenue

Scaramelli’s marks start in 1927 and scatter across the next two decades—with this mark, make that three.

1939 – P. Barale

29 January 2011

1939

559 Merritt Avenue

This pushes P. Barale’s dates one year closer to J. Barale, whose earliest mark so far is 1946. Even seven years after he stopped calling himself “P. Barale & Co.,” there are traces of the old wording here, and he never got himself a new stamp. If they were indeed custom-cast bronze dies, it was probably too costly to bother.
