1930 – S. Avena & Sons

13 June 2012

1948 13th Avenue

This is interesting. The very same mark appears in 1947 as “Avena and Son” rather than “S. Avena and Sons.” Between these two years, Mr. Avena chiseled off the first and last letters.

1928 – Hennig

12 June 2012

1928

1345 E. 34th Street

I already have a 1928 Hennig mark, but this one is better and configured differently.

1927 – Albert Nelson

11 June 2012

1927

1377 E. 32nd Street

After all the W. O. Nelsons and F. E. Nelsons, this is the third Nelson on an Oakland sidewalk.

1925 – Geo. D. Prentice

10 June 2012

1925

2200 13th Avenue

This is right across the street from the address on the stamp. The building there is a nondescript home of that vintage.

1924 – M. J. McDonough

9 June 2012

1924

2585 13th Avenue

1914 – M. Goncalves

8 June 2012

1914

Stuart Street at E. 32nd Street

M. Goncalves is a new maker for me, and only my second with an “East Oakland” address (the other is C. F. Lund).

1911 – Sandin & Swanson

7 June 2012

1911

1350 E. 33rd Street

This hand-drawn mark establishes Sandin & Swanson a year earlier than their attractive oval stamps record.
