J. Abreu & Son

21 June 2014

1357 63rd Avenue

I’ve surveyed the whole area around Abreu’s address and didn’t see his mark there. Always fun to find a new name in the Oakland sidewalk scene.

E. M. Hylt

3688 Lily Street

A mark like this demands a Talmudic attention to font design. Is the obstructed first letter an E or an F? I was ready to guess F, but the 1911 Husted’s Directory for Oakland, Alameda and Berkeley has a listing for Eric M. Hylt, laborer, residing at 25 Franklin Avenue, which later became 39th Avenue. The 1922 directory lists him at 3732 39th Avenue, presumably the same house. The 1909 directory lists him as “cementwkr.” He wasn’t in the 1907 or 1910 directory.

This is his only surviving mark in Oakland.

(Manuel) Rose

4114 Masterson Street

There are a couple of these here, so it’s not an aberration. I believe that Manuel Rose kept using his Gets & Rose stamp until he could have one made with his own name.

C. A. Peterson

3914 Maybelle Avenue

You might call this a “type” mark from C. A. Peterson, whose business address was right next door. There are several others near here, all of them beautifully made.

Mackenzie & Lundberg

4221 Masterson Street

Interesting; I know Mackenzie from the 1950s, not the 1920s. Was it an elder Mackenzie? And what about Lundberg?

3722 38th Avenue

There are a bunch of these here, all of them better than the previous example I used for this so-far-undated mark.

Paul Mara

3825 Harbor View Avenue

A faint mark, with some hesitant attempts at style.
