1903 – J. Sorensen

14 August 2023

2920 Ellis Street, Berkeley

I don’t have a record of J. Sorensen marks in Oakland, but I’m including it here because there are several different Sorensens and Sorensons represented in this part of the East Bay and I haven’t worked out their relationships. I think this was laid by John R. Sorensen, who lived for many years in Berkeley.

1903 – Contra Costa Construction Co.

13 August 2023

2147 Russell Street, Berkeley

Semicircular stamps have been doubled up this way from the beginning. The last practitioner I can think of was Carlos Valenzuela, who did it from 1939 to 1960 and then used just one.

1903 – C. J. Lindgren

1908

6434 Raymond Street

Thanks to Lincoln Cushing’s reference site, I can identify this as my first C. J. Lindgren mark.

Thanks to the comment below, I can confidently give this a 1903 date, one of only two in the whole city.

1903 – G. D. Prentice Co.

11 July 2008

1908

4246 Gilbert Street

I think I’ve deciphered the maker of this stamp as G. D. Prentice, after repeated visits at different times of day and lighting. That’s probably the Geo. D. Prentice I documented from 1928.
