1928 – L. Banchero & Co.

8 June 2015

1928yyyy

2019 86th Avenue

This mark is special for two reasons. One, it’s a date by this maker I haven’t found before, so I had to collect it. Second, it’s the mark placed at Banchero’s actual address. I would think that he’d have done a more careful job, considering.

1922 – M. B. Wiggins

1922qq

1734 Auseon Street

It looks like early in 1922, M. B. Wiggins used large numerals for the date. Later that year he used smaller digits. “2-22” was pretty special. Maybe he started business on 2/2/22, the same day that James Joyce’s Ulysses was published.

1915 – G. Costello

I continue to find new makers from the early days, even after all this time.

1914 – A. H. Kopperud

5 June 2015

1914ss

1663 Auseon Street

This has the typical configuration of other Kopperud marks, with all three parts of the date underneath.

1914rr

1609 86th Avenue

This mark is from very early in 1914, January to be precise. The month is up inside the mark, and the day and year are underneath.

1950 – L. Banchero

3 June 2015

1950ee

1434 84th Avenue

Yes, the 5 is upside-down, but I think it’s a real 5. All of the 1920s Banchero marks I’ve seen—hundreds of them—used a regular-old 2. And of course in the twenties it was “Banchero & Co.”

1948 – H. Mart

2 June 2015

1948dd

1957 85th Avenue

I’ve recorded a similar hand-drawn mark from 1948 by H. O. Mart, with a different phone number.
