1988 – Apodaca Bros.

20 September 2023

151 Hillcrest Road, Berkeley

1952 – G. W. Griset

4 September 2023

3108 Lewiston Avenue, Berkeley

I have Griset marks from 1950 to 1958, but most of the dates are rare.

1936 – Geo. S. McMullin

28 August 2023

4606 Fairbairn Avenue

I have McMullin marks dated from 1931 to 1936, and except for the hand-drawn dates, every one appears to modify a 1931 stamp. A mark I previously identified as a 1935 mark is actually just like this, a 1936 mark. Fortunately I also have a hand-drawn mark from 1935, so that year is still represented on Oakland sidewalks.

1931 – Geo. S. McMullin

27 August 2023

Holman and Fleet Streets

A much better shot than my previous example.

1930 – M. Mottino

26 August 2023

6106 Harwood Avenue

Normally I wouldn’t bother with a mark this poor, but it establishes that Mottino used a proper metal stamp for the date as well as hand-writing dates.

1921 – F. A. Mero

25 August 2023

2915 Acton Street, Berkeley

This stamp, yet another example of Mero’s marks that year, is a nice pulled-together piece that gives his city as Richmond. Not many Richmond masons practiced this far south.

1916 – The Oakland Paving Co.

24 August 2023

29 Tanglewood Street, Berkeley

The date on this mark differs from my Oakland example. The numerals appear to have been impressed one at a time. Clearly there were several stamps that went out with the crews, some with nice dates and others with makeshift dates.

This part of Berkeley is exceptionally opulent, and peaceful despite being right near the Claremont traffic/business nexus.
