C of O (City of Oakland)

25 January 2025

These are found scattered all over downtown. None of them are new. Most have the design above, with bigger or smaller letters, but there’s also this one from downtown Broadway that I like a lot.

1938 – O. C. Jones

22 January 2025

3247 Kempton Avenue

I’ve recorded this year and maker before, but in this instance the date omits the day and the S in “Jones” is upside down.

1953 – T. J. Garvey

20 January 2025

Perkins Street at Adams Street

Sometimes the low sun brings out a date I couldn’t see before.

1964 – Goyak Construction

16 January 2025

Harrison Street at Frisbie Street

The Goyak Construction Company was in Richmond. Nick Goyak (1892-1968) was a Croatian immigrant from Veliko Brdo who arrived with his family in 1929. This mark is in the roadway along the curb. (Thanks to Ken for spotting this one.)

1925 – S. Avena & Sons

3 January 2025

1210 Derby Street, Berkeley

The Avena family practiced for three generations; this is the first iteration. I have only one example from Oakland.

1915 – A. Soda

1 January 2025

1511 Derby Street, Berkeley

As I expected, Andrea Soda did some of his earliest work in nearby Berkeley.

1907 – G. W. Werner

30 December 2024

1712 Stuart Street, Berkeley

A rare stamp; only one found in Oakland.
