W. D. Perine

E. 20th Street at 12th Avenue

This confirms that yesterday’s mark is in fact by W. D. Perine. I don’t dare guess the date, which is in the middle of this mark, but marks of this type generally predate 1920.

I’ve been out to this location twice in the past month and have not spotted this mark from this historic sidewalk paver – with much recent concrete sidewalk paving near that corner, I’m afraid that this mark is probably now gone. Fortunately there is still a W.D. Perine mark of this design in Berkeley – thanks to Lincoln Cushing’s website, I located it at the corner of Haste and Fulton.

That would be a shame. As I recall, the mark was on the southeast corner of that intersection.

Thanks – I’ll have to go have another look there.

I stopped by there this morning and I’m pretty sure the W.D. Perine mark is gone. Lots of recent sidewalk paving around corners in that area, and I think the nice crisp L.R. Wicker mark on 11th Ave. and E. 20th St. is gone as well. There is another, though well-worn, L.R. Wicker mark on the corner of 12th Ave. and E. 19th Street though – I’m sure you’ve seen it and at least that one is still there.
