1905 – Geo. Hall

2108 Russell Street, Berkeley

George H. Hall was an early Berkeley contractor and was probably the Hall of Hall and Nelsen. There are no Geo. Hall marks in Oakland, but I’ll keep this one anyway.

Lincoln actually has this contractor in his catalog – it’s Geo. Hall:

I’m not sure whether this particular mark is still there, though I’ve spotted a couple of other examples in North Berkeley. One was pretty illegible but the other – on the east side of Milvia somewhere near Rose if I recall correctly – is in considerably better shape. The one you show here is the first I’ve seen with a year marked.

Cushing was not sure of the name. Thanks for sending your photo, which clearly shows the name “Geo. Hall.” I see he’s listed in the 1905 directory as a “cement contr” at 2712 Telegraph Avenue. I will add the name to the title!

I took a walk to look at this one earlier today and found another from 1905 nearby – wanted to see whether you’d spotted it since it was partially obscured by leaves. It’s on the southeast corner of Russell & Lorina. The upper part of the mark is pretty worn but from the configuration it looks like a C.B. Burnham stamp. The 1905 year marking is very clear, and the curved “Berkeley”.
