1909 – C. B. Burnham

1909

4722 West Street

The north end of West Street has a handful of century-old homes. The sidewalk here has no trace of a maker, just this date. Sidewalks of this vintage have curved lines that set off entryways; whenever I spot them I look sharp. The best match to these numerals is the set used by G. B. Burnham, so that’s who I will attribute this mark to. And indeed, since I made this page in 2010 I have found an exact match in Berkeley.

I used to work in masonry, so I notice the differences in the contractor’s styles, the textures of the cements, the designs of the pads. In Hollywood there’s an old section of sidewalk formed in checkerboard squares. As you remarked, some walks feature curved stylish lines. The oldest sidewalk mark I’ve seen around here is from 1915, and the pads had a rough broom finish. Nearly 100 years later and the uneven bristle trails were still clearly detectable.

You may have seen it, but there’s a nice 1909 Burnham Co. stamp in Berkeley, on the west side of College Avenue just a short way south of Webster Street. It’s the only dated Burnham mark I’ve seen other than 1908.
