There are several of these on this block. The words are in a trapezoid instead of the familiar triangle, and there were no dates associated with them.

    Since I posted this, I’ve learned that these marks predate the ones in the triangle. There are several preserved in Berkeley that go back as far as 1901. Oddly, some of them have the two Ns reversed. I hope to find some as I finish up northern Oakland.
