    There are a couple of J E Reed stamps on Euclid Ave in Berkeley just outside Northside Travel, similar to this one.

    I think “Berk 9404 R 1” is a phone number. Ask the operator for Berkeley 9404, Ring 1 (that is, a single ring to get the right party on a party line).

    That’s a fun detail, Mike. Phone numbers began showing up on sidewalk stamps around 1920. I think back then, it must have felt like seeing URLs cast in bronze today.
